Case Study – Sacred Heart Mission

Sacred Heart Mission

Sacred Heart Mission in St Kilda (Melbourne) is a not-for-profit organisation based in Grey Street, West St Kilda. After receiving a $27.3 million precinct redevelopment upgrade to its buildings between the corners of Robe and Grey streets, including Alfred Place. The redevelopment allows the centralization of administrative services for the Mission, furthermore merging the existing aged care buildings under one roof enables the facility to increase the number of aged care beds, providing greater opportunity to improve the lives of older people who are experiencing homelessness, within the City of Port Phillip.

Building Engineering was contracted to undertake the major building works of consolidating the buildings and the services within them which included the wayfinding signage.  As design plays a significant role in ensuring a wayfinding strategy is not only user-friendly and successful, Icon Creations expertise and experience in wayfinding signage provided Building Engineering with the confidence to partner in providing the design content, manufacture and installation of wayfinding, statutory, door numbering, digitally printed environmental wall graphics, vision strips, including external custom made engraved plaques.

Our graphics team implemented design principles and by following our procedures managed the artwork approvals for individual sign content and manufacture specifications for final approval with the client. Careful consideration with the angular feature of the wayfinding signs created attention to the placement and the content of the wayfinding signage. The wayfinding design captured the interior wall colour pallet for each level, incorporating the same level colour into the wayfinding signage helped visually in one’s knowledge they have either reached their destination or confidently know the next step in their journey. Confidence in knowing where you are and where you may need to go helps to reduce patient, visitor and staff stress and anxiety improving the overall experience while in the care of Sacred Heart Mission.

Our project managers provided alternative materials to improve the aesthetics, manufacturing process and budget considerations. Key project outcomes were identified and the management of specific statutory signs became a high priority to have in place to meet building codes and inspections. A very successful outcome and project overall.
