Case Study – CSIRO Clayton Signage

CSIRO Clayton Signage

CSIRO engaged Icon Creations to undertake the upgrade of signage at their Clayton site.

A 2D concept had been designed to refresh the branding, and provide uniformity across the broad range of sign types present on site.  Slim pylon signs to heights of 5.0m, 4.0m and 2.0m comprised the main elements of the sign family. This was supported by secondary signage in the form of circular 3D profiled logos, framed sign panels and formed sign panels.

The concept design called for a full height bull-nosed side detail on the pylon signs including a distinctive custom made off-form, raw concrete skirt to contrast the sharp gloss white cladding of the sign face with the ground texture of the surrounding landscaping.

Icon Creation’s industrial design team added value by sourcing a specialist in metal sheet rolling to undertake extremely tight radius rolling of the feature bull nose side profile of the pylon signs. We provided direction during the prototyping process to arrive at a consistently reliable and professional outcome on this aspect of manufacture.

In addition, our team worked closely with the concrete mold makers to design the individual concrete skirt components, giving attention to sectioning and fixing methodology. Weight of concrete, reinforcement, style of fixing and surface finish to faces and corners were all considered so as to arrive at a very pleasing result.

Our production team constructed jigging patterns to manufacture frames and supporting brackets to accommodate tight tolerances as each assembly stage was critical to enable final cladding to present with symmetrical shadow lines.

A number of sign locations presented installation challenges due to below ground services plus landscape levels and conditions.  Our professional team of engineers, ground scanning services and installers combined their expertise and experience to design special pier or blocked footings to provide sound solutions in each instance.

The result has been an architecturally sound, iconic, sign presence, lifting the CSIRO brand to take them into the future.
